Ofelia’s frustration at having to allow Pansy to walk away because they were in a crowd was profound. She did her best to follow the succubus, but because it was the French Quarter, it didn’t take long for the crowds to swallow up Pansy in a sea of shenanigans. Then she was gone.

Ofelia kept searching, but it was fruitless. Then Sully texted and offered to buy her lunch.

He met her outside Brennan’s, and she immediately went to him and wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest.

“What’s this?” Puzzled, he dropped a kiss on top of her head and squeezed tight.

“I found her,” Ofelia said in a low voice.

“Pansy?”

Ofelia nodded. “I thought maybe she would be hanging around Jackson Square.”

“Because that’s where I was in my dream,” Sully surmised. “Obviously she was there.”

“Actually, she was on the steps to the riverwalk. I followed her up there. We had a conversation. I wanted to kill her, but there were too many people around.”

“It’s okay.” Sully rubbed his hands over her back. “As long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters.”

“She’s not done coming after you.”

“Well, that’s good, because I’m not done going after her.” Sully gave her one more squeeze and then pulled back. “Come on. You need some food. We’ll get into things after we order.”

Ofelia mutely nodded as he led her into the restaurant. She didn’t have much of an appetite, but they definitely needed to talk.

Once settled, they perused the menus. When Ofelia settled on a cup of soup, Sully scowled.

“She’s not having a cup of soup,” he said to the server when the man arrived to take their order. He looked at the menu with fresh eyes. “We’ll both have the seafood gumbo with a side salad.”

Ofelia wrinkled her nose when he handed the menus to the server.

“You don’t get to complain when you’re being obnoxious,” he warned. “You’re eating it all too.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“You will be when I talk you down.” Sully’s smile was cheeky. “I know you’re in a bad spot because you think you failed, but you didn’t, Fe. You couldn’t have started throwing magic around on the riverwalk. On top of that, you couldn’t exactly wrap your hands around her neck and strangle her in front of so many witnesses. There was nothing you could do other than what you did.”

“Then why does it feel like I failed?”

“Because you’re too hard on yourself.” The look Sully shot her was stern. “Don’t be weird, Ofelia. We’re going to figure it out.” He rested his hand on top of hers. “Tell me everything she said.”

Ofelia laid it all out. When she got to the part about Pansy saying this wasn’t her first time in New Orleans, he was intrigued.

“Does that mean she has a house somewhere?”

Ofelia held out her hands. “I have no idea. I’m guessing so. I don’t know how that helps us if we don’t have a real last name to track her.”

“You let me worry about that.” Sully traced his fingers over the top of hers.
